Fall Colors – Part 4

We have left Boston and George’s old stomping grounds. But we are off to another of George’s stomping grounds, the Cape. Prior to Boston, his family was in the Hyannis area for many years. We headed down to the Dunroamin’ campground in Sandwich, MA. We met up with a high school friend of his, Evan with his wife Mary. They had a 5th wheel and we all camped together there.

We spent some time in downtown Hyannis with George and Evan reminiscing about what was gone and what was still there. We ended the day at a Pizza place George used to frequent.

The next day was a trip to P’town (Provincetown) at the endpoint of the cape. We went to the National Park, drove the huge truck through the tiny town, and had lunch with all the other tourists. On our way back we stopped in Chatham to visit some more friends of George.

The travel day had me in the lead of all three of us. We were headed to Horseneck State Beach and I was determined NOT to take the Interstate. We had the time and it was more scenic. The campground was very nice, near the ocean with the low scrub shrubbery common to the area.

The next day our paths diverged. George, Marica, Evan, and Mary were going to go on a boat ride with Evan’s brother over to Martha’s Vineyard Island. We were invited but Roxie has severe seasickness so we opted to go for a short drive around the area and a small walk by the water.

That evening Evan’s brother graciously had all of us to his house for a delightful dinner.

We continued on our journey, parting ways with Evan and Mary. We were heading to the next Chen relative/friend stop. We were getting close to New York City but we were not stopping there this time. Our next stop was at Croton Point SP, complete with its’ own fall colors.

An odd fact about this park is that it is on the Hudson River and across from Sing Sing prison.

The drive from Croton Point was very pretty going through some hills and lots of trees. George and Marcia were heading to see a relative of Marcia and staying in their driveway just over the NJ, in PA. We were staying at the Spruce Run Recreation Area in Clinton NJ.

The spaces were on asphalt and were kind of parallel parking. That was good as everything else was pretty soggy from the rain. We were able to do household things here, laundry, Thai food, and a Costco run.

The next stop was Delaware, but we had to skirt around Trenton, NJ, and Philadelphia, PA. We met up with George and Marcia at a fuel stop down the road and ventured forth. My tendency is to follow non-interstate roads when possible but it bit me in the butt on this leg.

Lambertville, NJ is on the Delaware River which is the border between NJ and PA. There are two bridges to take, a toll bridge and a non-toll bridge. Being cheap I opted for non-toll, or I could blame it on the GPS. This was a Saturday and headed straight through downtown Lambertville. It was very crowded with visitors for the day. As we approached the bridge I noticed there were weight limits with some type of ‘officer’ at the bridge opening so we opted not to take it. However, the only option was to turn left into a tight hotel parking lot with valet parking. I talked to the valet guy and he expressed his love of Airstreams and permitted us to turn around in their lot and head to the toll bridge.

We continued on, uneventfully with a gourmet lunch at Costco. We passed into Delaware for our next stop, Killens Pond SP.

Nice little campsite but no chance of any satellite electronics here! You may notice one other thing in the photo? Roxie always helps me back into sites that are wide-open and have walkie-talkies. Once we got in there, I walked around and found this:

We just missed it! I didn’t remember if Roxie was ever on this side of the trailer and she didn’t remember either. Bullet dodged!

Just a quick overnight here and off to see one of Roxie’s cousins (actually her 1st cousin, once removed but let’s not get started on that). She is in North Carolina and we came to visit them in 2017 on our initial start into retirement. But on the way, we needed to cross the Chesapeake Bay.

We spent two nights with Angelique (Roxie’s 1st cousin – once removed) and her family. George, Marcia, and I took a drive to Kitty Hawk. Roxie and I did this in 2017 and she wanted to stay to visit, naturally. Angelique and Steve (husband) ironically have an Airstream also.

We had a nice visit with them but it was time to stop our eastern tour and head back to the west. That will be the next installment.

  1. Great recap of your trip to the east coast! I miss NY and east coast in general. I went to school up the Hudson in Hyde Park. I do remember Croton! On the train stop I think it’s referred to as Croton on Harmon.
So much more exploration to do in that area including P Town.

Safe travels west for you both!
