Alumafiesta 2014 trip – Day 7 – Roving Happy Hour

Today started oddly for us.  We got up early enough to go down and have breakfast!  The morning flew by but I cannot say what we did.  I cannot remember.  The next thing we knew that it was time for Food Truck Friday.

Rich and Brett brought in 3 food trucks from the local area.  One was German food, another Indian and the last was an Asian Mexican Fusion.  We chose the latter.  I had a Bam Bam Burger (Korean meat, pineapple salsa, 4 cheeses and a Sriracha dressing).  Roxie had  a Korean burrito.  They were both very good.  Here is Rich getting his order (also a Bam Bam Burger):

Right after lunch we went shopping for a bit.  We picked up a Dyson DC44 for us in the trailer.  Thank you Cindy and Allen.  We also got a few groceries since Roving Happy Hour was coming at 5pm.

Roving Happy Hour (RHH) is, in concept, upto 5 trailers obtain a blue rotating beacon (much like Kmart).  The rest of the Airstreamers are welcome to stop into these marked locations and partake of whatever refreshments there are.  The interesting thing about this one is that 5 beacons went out initially but two came back!  That meant that 3 trailers were doing the RHH. And we were one of them…

At Alumafandango 2013 Roxie was interested in doing it.  There was one every evening there.

Roxie made some dip with chips and we heated up some Orange Chicken.

it was a huge success.  We consistently had people outside and inside the trailer.  This is one of the best things about these get-togethers is people get to see inside of other’s trailers.  I primarily did the inside and Roxie the outside.  I was unable to take any pictures because we were busy for about 2 hours.  It was fantastically fun!

We got to the evening presentation late but it was just starting.  Carlos Lozano from Vanishing Tucson  presented about the Tiki/Polynesian influence in the world and Tucson specifically.  On the way home some neighboring Airstreamers mentioned that Airstream did the same in their trailer with the Ocean Breeze motif.  Too bad that couldn’t have been worked in:

Tomorrow is the last day and then all the Airstreams will disperse.  Always a sad day.

Alumafiesta 2014 Trip – Day 6 – Still cloudy

Another day, more clouds.  I thought we were going to hit some warmer weather here!

There have been a lot of offsite tours at the venue this year.  We are scheduled to go on one on Saturday.  The presentations/seminars started in earnest around 2pm.

It started with a tech tips Q&A with the main repair dude from the LazyDays RV center.  LazyDays is a new Airstream dealer and so their service department is new also.  This guy did the best he could and they probably could do a decent job on repairs but he was a bit out of his element.  Some of the participants probably knew better than he did.

Next up was the judging of the ‘Aluminum Chef’.  The contestants were given a list of ingredients (cream cheese, raisins, maple, pumpkin or butternut squash, white beans).  9 people competed.  One of our new friends (Stephanie) created this:

Three were selected to continue to the finals on Saturday.  Stephanie made it to the final round as did her husband Sam.  We will see…

Happy hour and Taiko drumming were next.  A local drumming school, Odaiko Sonora, performed and were thoroughly entertaining.  The drumming was exact and very pleasant.  The commentary was informative and sublime.  Here are some shots of the performance:

The last part was audience participation.  I was too busy taking the pictures I couldn’t do it.  Darn.

The final evening presentation was “Tarnished Glow: the rise and fall of Miracle Mile” by Demion Clinco of the Tucson Historical Preservation Foundation.  He talked about the early history of Tucson and the integration of automobiles.  The history of how motor hotels came to be very prevalent to non-existent.  He told us about the Miracle Mile of Tucson, which ironically we were on earlier in the day.  It was disheartening to see the decline and decay of these historic items but heartening to see people interested in the preservation.

Back to the trailer and hearing a few raindrops falling.  <sigh>
