Alumafiesta 2014 trip – Day 5 – Full Day

We started out the day slowly as usual but I had a mission.  The night before we went to heat up some lasagna and we put it in the microwave.  5 minutes later it was still cold.  Tried again.  No change.  Our microwave had bit the dust after only one year.  I went to the LazyDays RV center knowing that they weren’t able to help in a timely manner but I thought I would give it a try.  They were willing to try but it would have taken longer than we were going to be here.

We went to WalMart to pickup one so we had something until we get this one fixed under warranty when we return.  We actually got two.  One was small enough that I KNEW it would fit but the other was larger and MIGHT fit.  The larger did fit so we have a temporary microwave to use.

We weren’t sure what things we were going to do today until Scott and Stephanie, who we met at Alumafandango, invited us to head to Tubac just south of town.  Tubac is a small artsy area where there are many shops and restaurants to browse.  Today was a bit different.  It seems we happened to hit the town at the beginning of their Festival of the Arts.  It was much busier but also had much more to look at.  We had a nice lunch at a fancyish Mexican restaurant.

We got back to the Fiesta to join in Happy Hour which is a bunch of announcements and some giveaways.  I won a calendar of Dogs of the Iditarod (remember we love other peoples dogs).  Immediately afterward a local Karate group performed their maneuvers for us:

We went back to the trailer and used our microwave to heat up some leftovers and it WORKED!  Yea!

The ending performance was Alex and Charon, the Sword Swallowers.  We had heard of them many times but had never seen them until tonight.  It was a very weird and wonderful.  Alex hammered a nail into his nose and they both swallowed various swords.  The end ‘swallow’ was a neon tube and it lit up Alex’ throat.  Here is a gallery of shots from the night:

You definitely won’t find this at a WBCCI rally!

That’s all for tonight.

Alumafiesta Trip 2014 – Day 4 – More Aluminum

The kampground is really filling out today.  The Airstream count easily tripled.  We are now surrounded by Aluminum.  It is not only wonderful to see all these trailers it is even more heartening to see old friends.  We have seen many that we got to know at Alumafandango 2013.  We are also getting to know others that we will, I am sure, see down the road and at future events.

The festivities started this afternoon.  Rich and Brett, the organizers of these events, held a ‘Stump the Chumps’ seminar where people would ask them questions.  After that was ‘Yappy Hour’.  This is where Airstreamers with dogs could go to the dog park to meet, both dogs and attendees.  Roxie and I went as our motto is: “We love other people’s dogs”.  Following right on the heels of that was the human’s happy hour.  The LazyDays people (they own the KOA) sponsored this.  Everyone was invited to have a piece of wedding cake and champagne as a couple was honeymooning here at Alumafiesta!

In the evening was a seminar that was put on a couple of writers that wrote with an Airstream twist.  We met both authors at the Alumafandango.  Greg Zeigler and Tom Schabarum exchanged readings from their books, gave some inspirations of their work and also some tips for aspiring authors.  A Q&A session ensued.  It was good to see Tom again even though he flew in for only one night.  No Airstream for him!

Tomorrow holds more excitement, I am sure!
